I call them “masculine flasks”, but shape is a matter of interpretation. indeed, as usual, there are a good few examples of similar flasks from various places and times… but i find them tremendously entertaining to make.
 
This flask stands about 4.25 inches tall, and is wearing a stone ash glaze. Each batch of flasks starts with me centering a large hump of clay on the wheel, and individually turning round bottomed bottle forms off the top, this process is called “turning off the hump”. After some time, and a little drying of the flasks I throw a hollow cylinder of clay called a “chuck” which holds the bottles upside down on the wheel where I trim them round with an iron hook. The round flask is transformed into an anatomical vessel by denting a cleft, and slightly flattening the form. As per usual, my ware is made with hand dug North Carolina clay, hand made glazes, and is fired in a wood burning kiln.
