This crock has been hand turned with local stoneware clay which i dig and harvest myself, i have carefully adorned it with combed bands, carefully applied lugs, a happy snake, and bands of inlayed moonstone pearls. I have applied an old fashioned alkaline glaze and wood fired it in the traditional "groundhog" kiln at hart square in lincoln county NC. This piece got very hot in the kiln, while we are aiming for around 2350f, some parts of the kiln get considerably hotter, and this one was right in the front. This high heat has caused some of the moonstone pearls to boil, and some blisters to form in the clay body itself. I do not view these details as any sort of defect, but as a testament to the intense process that is traditional catawba valley pottery, yielding a charming and rustic finish like no other.
