This tankard is based on late medieval examples known as "point nose jugs" which where made in nothern germanic potteries in the 15th and 16th century.
I have made this piece using local stoneware clay which i dig and process by hand, it has been carefully wheel turned, the base thumbed, a sturdy handle added, and a face hand sculpted. It is adorned with several inlayed moonstone pearls before being coated with a traditional alkaline glaze made from wood ash, stone dust, clay, and powdered glass, before being wood fire to over 2350f in a "groundhog" kiln, traditional to the catawba valley region
I enjoy this sort of form as it allows me to reach back through the layers of the tradition through history, combining elements of tech ique and style spanning centuries
