I Love making skulls, its no secret that im a spooky boy, but for me, these are not morbid, but a reminder to love while im here.... but these are a major labor of love. Believe it or not, this started as a wheel turned closed form made, as always, with clay i dig by hand. I trim the bottom round (the back of the head), and then the real work begins. Over the period of weeks i heacily modify the form, pressing some parts in, building other parts up. I pull the cheek bones much in the way i would a handle and then refine their shape. Details like the sutures are carefully patterned in, and the teeth are painstakingly carved until they are just right. To this one, i have added an extra detail by emblazing the forehead with the legendary "helm of awe", qn icelandic runic stave used for strength and protection.

This piece is not glazed, well, not really... i have applied sifted wood ash over the skull and fired it to over 2350f in a wood burning kiln where i combines with the natural fly ash from the firing and gives a magical earthy shine that also lets the rustic beauty of the natural clay to show its best. This skull is roughly life sized, so it will really be perfect for the spooky viking with refined taste. Im not kidding, this piece really needs to be seen to be believed.
