The catawba valley potting tradition may be old, but it lives still. Crocks like this one where a staple part of everyday life back in the day, necessary for food storage and preservation. Thought today we may not need to put up a few gallons of salt pork (though, you could) the classic beauty of this old utilitarian form still holds an allure to us, and holds its own in bringing a touch of days gone by to our life.

Not only is this form traditional, but it has been made with love in much the same way my predecessors would have done over a century ago. It has been carefully turned with clay which i dig locally and adorned with graceful lug hundles. It is coated in a traditional alkaline glaze made from wood ash, clay, powdered stone and glass, and small chips of glas are set over the lugs tonadd some interest in the fire. It has been fired to over 2350f in a traditional wood burning kiln which gives a very sturdy and food safe finish. Its stands at about 14", with its generous belly that puts this crock at about a 2 gallon capacity. Add this one to your collection while you can, it is a modern heirloom made to be enjoyed for generations
